Put Rejection in Perspective

A while back I was kicking around ideas with a friend of mine, Mark Jennings. Mark’s an advisor with Investors Group. He told me a great story that will help you put rejection in perspective.

Listen to the audio or read the transcript to learn the story and takeaway message.

In high school and college, Mark manned his own business. He was selling top soil door to door. Because he was selling less than a truckload at a time, he actually did very well. People generally buy too much top soil so it’s left over.

He was using a pickup truck and a wheelbarrow, so people could buy exactly what they wanted. It was a great idea.

Mark’s father was a general contractor, and he had spent time in his previous life with New York Life as a New York Life agent. He gave Mark some great advice:

“If people say no, it’s not that they don’t like you; they just don’t need top soil.”

Pass that on to any folks you know who are new in the business. When people say no to you, they’re not rejecting you, they’re rejecting your idea. Put that in perspective and move on.
