Don’s Monthly Newsletter for March 2015 – What Do You Say When Performance Is Bad?

On March 14, 2015, a Jeff Sommer article entitled ‘Mutual Funds Routing the Market? Zero’ appeared in the New York Times. The article flatly stated that over the last six years, “No mutual fund managers have …… managed to outperform the rising market consistently.” Sommer’s findings were based upon a study entitled ‘Does Past Performance Matter? The Persistence Scorecard.’ S & P Dow Jones Indices conducted the study. Going back to 2009, nearly 3000 broad, actively managed domestic stock mutual funds were regularly winnowed based on performance. Only two funds managed to stay in the top quarter for five years running. The author was careful to say that the study did not prove mutual fund managers lacked talent. But it was clear that investing with active managers may not be all that it’s cracked up to be.

What do the Advisors say who have clients in those 3000 funds? What do you say when the managed money platforms you espouse fail to outperform their benchmarks? What does any Advisor say when any recommendation doesn’t work as advertised? What do we say when we overpromise and underperform?

Read or listen to the monthly newsletter, available in written as well as audio format.

The AskDON episode which goes with this Monthly Newsletter comes from Erik at Morgan Stanley. He asks a great question.

I just sat through a presentation on “wow”ing clients and thought of you and the story you shared about the FA who checks his clients’ tires. It shows that going beyond expectations is the way that great relationships are made – and kept. I love reading your Tuesday tips – you continually remind me that clients and prospects are real people, with real concerns.

As for 2015, I am off to a decent start. I have refined my process numerous times since entering production. A persistent sticking point of mine was/is turning a great phone conversation into a great meeting. In turn, I am focusing more and more on what I see as the pain points, and instilling a sense of urgency. Do you have any good stories to help people see they should meet now (as opposed to “in a few months”)?

Find Don’s answer in the second part of both the written and the audio version of the Monthly Newsletter.
