Goal Setting: Don’t Look Where You Don’t Want to Go

Let’s talk about goal setting. I’d like to tell you about a piece I read, called “Keep your eyes on the prize”.

Watch the video or read the transcript below to learn the story about a man who was afraid of heights.

This man, who was afraid of heights, decided to conquer his fear by rappelling down the side of a steep cliff. A guide was on hand to help him, but he said that as he stood on the edge of the cliff, the sight of the long drop and the rocks down below made him freeze. The guy gave him some very simple advice.

Don’t look where you don’t want to go. How good is that in our business?

Don’t look where you don’t want to go. By focusing on his goal and not his fears, the man was able to complete his descent successfully, and safely. Plus he learned something about how to get past the things that scared him.

I urge you to write down your goals and keep them on your desk and refer to them every single day. If you don’t set your own goals on life then someone else will set them for you and you won’t like the result. As Gary Rogers said, everyone goes around the track once in life and if you don’t enjoy the trip it’s pretty pathetic.

So do something for me – reflect upon where you want to go in your career.

Then you figure out how to get there by working backwards. If you don’t do this, you run the risk of finding yourself bitter and regretful down the road.

I see too many people in old age, who when faced throughout their lives with opportunities for important decisions, failed to make the choice. They waited for those choices to be made for them, and didn’t like the outcome.

Don’t be like those people. Don’t be at middle age or old age with unfulfilled expectations from your earlier life; you’d be a very bitter person.

Decide where you want to end up and make the plan to get there.

Refuse to settle for less than you want. Don’t just get by, don’t wait for life to happen, make it happen. If you want to be a successful financial advisor, draw your roadmap right now. You begin by learning the basics, and you build from there. The basics never go out of style, so set your goals, make them basic, keep them on your desk, and refer to them every single day.
