Don’s Monthly Newsletter for January 2015 – Your Clients Will Go Where You Lead Them
On Monday, January 29, 2014, Virgin Atlantic flight 43 departed London Gatwick bound for Las Vegas. Disaster struck immediately. The landing gear would not retract properly, and, loaded with fuel, the plane was too heavy to land.
The only recourse was to circle Gatwick, burning off enough fuel to allow for an emergency landing. After circling for four hours, the pilot made a safe landing with broken landing gear.
Unless we have been through a similar situation, we cannot imagine the fear experienced by the passengers as preparations were made for that emergency landing. Yet nobody panicked. How was staying calm even an option?
Passenger Mike Kaufman explained. “When we landed, you can imagine the relief. We were told about the brace positions around two hours before we landed, and ran through it several times before we landed. The crew were (sic) calm and that made us calm.”
Most likely, nobody in that crew had ever been through an emergency landing. But they were trained to stay calm in the face of a tumultuous event. Even if they didn’t have confidence that things would turn out okay, they didn’t let it show. They stayed calm and the passengers took their cue from them.
At least once during 2015, you are going to find yourself needing to act as that flight crew acted. Unlike Virgin flight 43, your predicament won’t be a matter of life and death, but it will involve panic nonetheless.
Read or listen to the monthly newsletter, available in written as well as audio format.
The AskDON episode which goes with this Monthly Newsletter comes from an Advisor who shall remain nameless. He sent Don an email to say that he(the Advisor) is not great at closing; and he guesses the reason is that he is too nice and he understands and empathizes with the magnitude of the client’s decision, therefore not being firm enough. Nonetheless, said the Advisor, he is disappointed that more people don’t step right up to take advantage of his recommendations, recommendations well-thought out and sincere. What happens in that time between sitting down with good intentions of preparing for the future and then walking away?
Find Don’s answer in the second part of both the written and the audio version of the Monthly Newsletter.
